Sleep study test

Every morning in Delhi, thousands of people wake up tired. They slept eight hours and still feel exhausted. Their partner complains about loud snoring. They have a headache before breakfast. They fall asleep in meetings. They have been told their blood pressure is high — and no one knows why.

The answer, in a large number of these cases, is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) — a condition where the airway collapses repeatedly during sleep, cutting off oxygen. It affects an estimated 13.7% of urban Indian adults, yet over 90% remain undiagnosed. In Delhi and NCR, where pollution, stress, and sedentary lifestyles amplify the risk, the numbers are likely even higher

A sleep study test — also called a polysomnography or PSG test — is the only way to diagnose this accurately. This guide tells you everything about getting one done in Delhi: what types of tests exist, what each one costs, whether you can do it at home, and how to book without visiting a clinic.

Do You Need a Sleep Study? — Warning Signs to Watch For

Most people who need a sleep study test have been living with symptoms for years without connecting them to a sleep disorder. Here are the signs that indicate you should get tested — and which test is likely right for you.

Symptom

Likely Cause

Test Recommended

Loud snoring every night

Upper airway obstruction

Level 2 at-home test

Waking up gasping or choking

Level 2 or Level 1 PSG

Extreme daytime sleepiness

OSA, Narcolepsy, PLMD

Level 1 full PSG (lab)

Morning headaches daily

Oxygen drop during sleep

Level 2 at-home test

Pauses in breathing (observed by partner)

Central or Obstructive Apnea

Level 1 full PSG (lab)

Restless legs / leg jerks at night

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder

Level 1 full PSG (lab)

Sleepwalking / sleep talking

Parasomnias

Level 1 full PSG (lab)

High blood pressure + snoring

OSA (major BP driver)

Level 2 at-home test

Frequent night urination

OSA (pressure changes in chest)

Level 2 at-home test

Child snoring + hyperactivity

Paediatric OSA

Paediatric PSG (lab)

Important: You do not need to have all these symptoms. Even two or three — particularly loud snoring + daytime sleepiness, or snoring + high blood pressure — are enough clinical justification for a sleep study. Do not wait for the sleep apnea symptoms to become severe

Types of Sleep Study Tests Available in Delhi

Sleep studies are classified into four levels by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). In India, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 tests are the most commonly offered. Here is what each one measures and who it is right for.

The most comprehensive sleep test available. Conducted overnight at a sleep lab or hospital, with a technician monitoring you throughout the night.

• Measures: Full EEG (brain waves), eye movements (EOG), muscle activity (EMG), ECG, airflow, chest and abdominal effort, blood oxygen (SpO ), body position, snoring

• Diagnoses: OSA, Central Sleep Apnea, Narcolepsy, REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, Parasomnias

• Best for: Children, complex or unclear cases, patients where an at-home test came back inconclusive, anyone with significant cardiac or neurological history

• Where: Sleep labs at AIIMS Delhi, Fortis, Max, Apollo, Medanta (Gurgaon)

• Duration: One full night (8–10 hours)

Level 1 PSG is the gold standard. If your doctor has asked for a 'full sleep study' or a 'polysomnography', they are referring to Level 1.

The same comprehensive monitoring as Level 1, but conducted at home without a technician present. A portable device is set up by our technician at your home in the evening, worn overnight, and collected the next morning for analysis.

• Measures: EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, airflow, chest effort, SpO , body position

• Diagnoses: OSA (all severity levels), sleep staging, AHI calculation

• Best for: Adults with moderate-to-severe OSA symptoms who prefer testing at home in their own sleep environment

• Significant advantage: Sleeping in your own bed, in your usual position, with your usual pillows — produces more representative data than a lab

• Not for: Children, suspected narcolepsy or parasomnias

The most popular at-home sleep test in India. Lighter than Level 2 — no EEG — but covers the parameters most needed to diagnose OSA.

• Measures: Airflow (nasal cannula), chest and abdominal effort, blood oxygen (SpO ), pulse rate, snoring, body position

• Does NOT measure: Brain waves, sleep stages

• Diagnoses: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (AHI, RDI), oxygen desaturation index

• Best for: First-time diagnosis in adults with clear OSA symptoms (snoring + daytime sleepiness + witnessed apneas), follow-up testing after CPAP/BiPAP therapy

• Turnaround: Report within 24–48 hours

Level 4 — Overnight Pulse Oximetry (Screening Only)

The simplest screening test — a finger pulse oximeter worn overnight to measure blood oxygen drops. Not a diagnostic test on its own, but useful as an initial screen before a more detailed study. Widely available at pharmacies and online.

Not sure which level you need? Our team will ask you 3–4 quick questions about your symptoms and guide you to the right test before you book. No doctor's referral required for Level 2 and Level 3 at-home tests.

Who should choose

Adults with clear OSA symptoms, follow-up after CPAP

First diagnosis, paediatric, complex sleep disorder

Choose At-Home if:

You have classic OSA symptoms:

  • loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, daytime sleepiness, morning headaches

  • Your doctor suspects moderate-to-severe OSA

  • You have anxiety about sleeping in an unfamiliar environment Cost is a consideration

  • You want a fast result (24–48 hours vs 5–7 days for lab reports)

  • You are doing a follow-up study to check CPAP effectiveness

Choose In-Lab (Level 1) if:

  • You are a child (under 18 years)

  • You have a complex sleep disorder — narcolepsy, REM sleep behaviour disorder, parasomnias (sleepwalking, sleep talking)

  • You have significant cardiac or neurological conditions

  • A previous at-home test was inconclusive

  • Your doctor has specifically requested a full attended PSG

  • You need CPAP pressure titration in the same study (split-night)

How the At-Home Sleep Study Works — Step by Step

We have made the at-home sleep study process as simple as possible. You do not need to visit a clinic at any point.

Step 1 — Call or WhatsApp Us Tell us your symptoms or what your doctor has recommended. Our team will confirm whether a Level 2 or Level 3 at-home test is appropriate for you and explain what the test measures.

Step 2 — Book and Confirm Your Date We confirm your address and preferred date. Most bookings in Delhi are available the same day or next day. Evening slots are typically 7–9 PM for setup.

Step 3 — Technician Visits Your Home Our trained sleep technician arrives with the testing equipment. They attach the sensors — nasal cannula, chest belt, finger probe, and position sensor — demonstrate how to sleep with the device, and answer your questions before leaving. Step 4 — Sleep Normally in Your Own Bed Wear the device through the night. The device records all parameters automatically. Most patients sleep normally with the sensors. You do not need to keep any logs.

Step 5 — Equipment Collection Next Morning Our technician collects the device the next morning at a time convenient for you. Step 6 — Report from a Sleep Specialist The recorded data is analysed by a certified sleep physician. Your report includes your AHI score, oxygen desaturation index, snoring data, and a clinical recommendation. Reports are delivered within 24–48 hours via email and WhatsApp.

Step 7 — Consultation (Optional but Recommended) healthyjeenasikho.com If the report indicates sleep apnea, our team can connect you with a sleep specialist for interpretation. If CPAP or BiPAP therapy is recommended, we can arrange a trial device rental so you can experience the therapy before purchasing the machine.

No doctor's referral required for our at-home sleep tests. However, if you have a referral letter or prescription from your physician, please share it at the time of booking — our sleep physician will review it alongside the test data for a more personalised report.

Frequently Asked Questions — Sleep Study in Delhi Q: Do I need a doctor's prescription to book a sleep study?

No. You can book a Level 2 or Level 3 at-home sleep study directly without a referral. If you have a prescription or doctor's letter, please share it — our reporting physician will review it alongside your test data.

Q: How long does the test take?

The device is set up in 20–30 minutes in the evening. You wear it overnight for a minimum of 6 hours of data recording. The equipment is collected the next morning. Total involvement: one evening + one morning pickup.

Q: Can I eat and drink normally before the test?

Yes. Eat and drink normally. Avoid alcohol and sedatives on the night of the test as these suppress sleep apnea events and can lead to a falsely normal result. If you take any regular medications, continue taking them as prescribed.

Q: Can I eat and drink normally before the test?

Yes. Eat and drink normally. Avoid alcohol and sedatives on the night of the test as these suppress sleep apnea events and can lead to a falsely normal result. If you take any regular medications, continue taking them as prescribed.

Q: Will I be able to sleep with all the sensors on?

Most patients sleep comfortably with the sensors. The nasal cannula and finger probe are lightweight. The chest belt is elastic and non-restrictive. Some patients take 30–60 minutes longer to fall asleep initially — this is accounted for in the analysis and does not affect results.

Q: What if my test result is inconclusive?

An inconclusive result occurs in a small percentage of at-home tests — usually due to sensor displacement during sleep. In this case, we repeat the test at no additional charge. If the second test is also inconclusive, we will recommend an in-lab Level 1 PSG.

Q: How quickly will I get my report?

Level 2 and Level 3 at-home test reports are delivered within 24–48 hours of equipment collection, via email and WhatsApp. Reports are signed by a certified sleep physician.

Q: Is the at-home sleep test accurate?

Level 3 at-home sleep tests have been validated in multiple clinical trials and are accepted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and Indian sleep medicine guidelines for the diagnosis of moderate-to-severe OSA in adults. Studies show 85–90% agreement with full in-lab PSG for OSA diagnosis.

Q: Can children take the at-home sleep test?

No. Children under 18 require an attended Level 1 PSG conducted in a paediatric sleep lab. The at-home test is not validated for paediatric use and cannot diagnose the range of conditions that affect children's sleep.

Q: I snore but feel fine during the day. Should I still get tested?

Yes. Daytime sleepiness is absent in 30–40% of OSA patients, particularly younger adults and those with moderate OSA. Snoring alone — especially loud, regular snoring — is a significant risk factor. Untreated OSA increases the risk of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes regardless of whether you feel sleepy during the day.

Q: What is the difference between AHI and RDI? AHI (Apnea-Hypopnea Index)

counts the number of complete and partial airway obstructions per hour. RDI (Respiratory Disturbance Index) is broader — it also includes subtle breathing irregularities (RERAs) that don't fully meet the threshold for apneas. Your report will include both. RDI is typically slightly higher than AHI.

Q: Can I book a sleep study test as a gift for a family member? Yes. Many families book the test for elderly parents or spouses who are reluctant to seek medical attention. You can book in someone else's name and be present during the device setup. Our technicians are trained to handle patients who are nervous or unfamiliar with medical devices.
