Living with Diabetes

Updated: Aug 17, 2020

There are chances that you may know someone who is currently living with diabetes or blood sugar that’s how it is known in India. That person may even be you, the reason is every third person is suffering from diabetes. Diabetes occurs when the body has a problem using energy or glucose it gets from food. This causes too much glucose or sugar to stay in the blood. Insulin that comes from pancreas allows your body to use glucose from energy. But if your body cannot make insulin Type 1 diabetes occurs. On the flip side when the body becomes resistant to insulin or don’t make enough insulin it gives rise to Type 2 diabetes.

The effects of Diabetes on your body-

· Visual disturbance- damaged blood vessels in the eyes can cause visual disturbances like floaters. If left untreated can lead to blindness.

· Extreme thirst- this is one of the first noticeable symptoms of diabetes.

· Sweet- smelling breath- breath that has a sweet scent may show high level of ketones, a diabetic condition.

· Risk of heart disease- high blood pressure and damaged blood vessels put the pressure on heart and risk the cardiovascular diseases.

· Kidney disease- presence of proteins in the urine shows your kidneys may have some damage and not functioning well.

· Skin infections and conditions- high blood sugar causes the body to lose fluids at faster rates and lead to dry, cracked skin.

· Foot problems- the damaged foot nerve from high blood sugar increases the risks of infections or ulcers of the foot.

Sometimes your blood glucose level gets out of balance, this could lead to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. Which can happen when you skip meals or take meals after a long period, also if you exercise more than usual and take too much diabetes medications and insulin. On the other side you can have hyperglycemia or high blood sugar. If you get too sick or stress or eat more than planned, exercise less than plan this leads to hyperglycemia. Diabetes has no cure but it can managed very well. Self-care activities help you feel good and prevent or delay the complications.

Self-care activities-

· Eating habits-

1. Eating healthy, balanced meals and snacks spaced throughout the day.

2. Healthy carbs are found in vegetables, whole grains, fruits and low-fat dairy foods and break down into glucose that your body uses.

3. Although sugary foods like candy, sweets and regular soda can raise blood sugar very easily.

· Physical activity-

Your muscles use the glucose from food for energy to help keep blood glucose levels on target. On the other hand being active helps with weight loss, lowering cholesterol and improve blood pressure.

It is true that managing your diabetes is quite challenging at times and it’s normal to feel down and stressed out. That’s why it’s very important for you to have a solid network of people in your life, then you can turn to when things get tough.
